Working method

While travelling I gather my sources of documentation by means of
photos, flyers, press clippings and picture postcards. I use these in my studio to create a painting in which the structure and the appliance of the paint as matter - in an unforced way - acquires just as much attention as the image itself. In order to do so, I use a working method by which great accuracy and transparent parts painted in layers provide extra depth.

Themes

Willingness to help in the existence of man, nature and living environments is my main theme. The scenery often stands for itself; the rhythm of the trees and the incidence of the light don't require any more explanation. Another one of my themes is the beauty of decay, of which the paintings of deteriorated factories and buildings are examples. Sometimes silhouettes or humanlike creatures appear, who estrange the view by their acting. Concerning my main theme, depicting completeness, having experienced it all and thus creating the ability to have the painting propagate a clear story by itself, is most important to me. Respect for choices, in any way possible, is however always present, like in the Rush song 'Freewill'; "If you choose not to decide you, still have made a choice". This is my vision and interpretation of what can be seen as "Realism": powerful and convincing. I feel related to this symbolism and I want to convey this to the viewer, so that one can feel the melancholy that comes with it from one's inside.

Methode

Op reizen leg ik mijn brondocumentatie aan door middel van foto's, flyers, krantenknipsels en ansichtkaarten die verwerk ik later in mijn atelier tot een schilderij waarbij de structuur en opbrengen van de verf als materie -op een ongeforceerde manier- een even grote rol krijgt als de afbeelding. Ik hanteer hierbij een methode waarbij dik opgezette trefzekerheid en transparante in lagen geschilderde partijen voor extra dieptewerking zorgt.

Thematiek

Mijn belangrijkste thema legt zich toe op de dienstbaarheid in het bestaan van mens, natuur en leefomgevingen. Vaak staat het landschap op zich en vertelt het ritme van de bomen of de val van het licht genoeg. Anders gaat het over de schoonheid van het verval zoals bij de schilderijen over teloorgegane fabrieken en gebouwen. Soms duiken er silhouetten of mensfiguren op die met hun handelen het beeld vervreemden. Het gaat mij binnen mijn hoofdthema om het uitbeelden van de compleetheid, van het alles hebben meegemaakt en daarmee het vermogen om de afbeelding vanuit zichzelf een duidelijk verhaal te kunnen laten uitdragen. Daarbij is er echter altijd het respect voor de keuze, in welke vorm dan ook. Zoals in het Rush nummer 'Freewill' "If you choose not to decide you, still have made a choice". Het is mijn visie en invulling van wat als Realisme beschouwd kan worden: krachtig en steekhoudend. Met deze symboliek voel ik mij verwant en wil ik overbrengen op de kijker opdat men de melancholie die daar aan te pas komt van binnenuit voelt.
